Fitment Guide
Air Coupler Identifier
Air fittings that look alike don't always fit. The plug on your tool decides which coupler you need, and two quick measurements on its tip tell you which style it is. Match yours below, or step through it.
Which Plug Do You Have?
Five styles cover nearly every 1/4 in. air fitting. They're drawn to the same scale, and the red is the tip, where they differ. Tap the one that looks like yours.
Your Plug
M-Style: Industrial
Also called I/M or Type D. A 5/16 in. tip with a short 3/16 in. nose ahead of the groove.

Tip sizes are for 1/4 in. body plugs and are nominal. Flow ratings come from our listings.
Step Through It
Here's how to identify a real plug, a Milton 727 M-style with a 1/4 in. male thread, one measurement at a time.

Step 1 of 6
Find the Plug
Every quick connect has two halves. The plug is the male tip, usually on the tool. The coupler is the female socket with a sleeve, usually on the hose. The plug's shape decides which coupler you need.
How to Tell Them Apart
- The plug is solid metal with a groove around its nose. It screws into the tool's air inlet.
- The coupler has a spring sleeve. Pull the sleeve back and the plug pops out.
- Measure the plug. It's the half that comes in different shapes.
- Already have a coupler that fits? Its listing or package names the style, so check there first.
Why It Matters
Plug styles look alike at a glance but lock at different depths. A plug pushed into the wrong coupler may not lock at all, or it can pop out under pressure.
Get It Right: Running a mix of plugs? The Milton 1750 universal coupler takes M, A, T, V and L plugs, and bleeds off the air before it lets go.
Step 2 of 6
Measure the Tip Width
Measure across the front of the plug, the part ahead of the groove. On 1/4 in. body plugs, the width narrows it down fast.
How to Measure
- Close a caliper across the tip at its widest point.
- 5/16 in. (7.9 mm): an M-style or an A-style.
- 3/8 in. (9.5 mm): a T-style or a V-style.
- 9/32 in. (7.1 mm): an L-style, Lincoln.
Tip width by style
Why It Matters
The width cuts five styles down to two at most. The tip length tells those two apart.
Get It Right: These sizes are for 1/4 in. body plugs, the everyday size. Bigger 3/8 and 1/2 in. bodies are in step 5.
Step 3 of 6
Measure the Tip Length
Now measure from the front edge of the plug back to where the groove starts.
How to Measure
- Use the caliper's depth rod, or hold the jaws flat along the tip.
- 5/16 in. wide: a 3/16 in. tip is an M-style. A 5/16 in. tip is an A-style.
- 3/8 in. wide: a short 1/16 in. lip is a T-style. A 3/16 in. tip is a V-style.
- 9/32 in. wide: the long 3/4 in. tip of an L-style.
Why It Matters
The coupler's locking balls drop into that groove. If the groove sits at the wrong depth, the plug won't lock, or it locks loose and leaks.
Get It Right: Measure the tip, not the thread. Two plugs with the same 1/4 in. NPT thread can be two different styles.
Step 4 of 6
Match the Style
Put the two numbers together and you have your style. Tap each one to see its shape and size.
Compare the styles
The Five Styles
- M-style, Industrial: 5/16 in. wide, 3/16 in. tip. Also called I/M or Type D.
- A-style, ARO: 5/16 in. wide, 5/16 in. tip. The ARO 210 interchange, also called Type B.
- T-style, Automotive: 3/8 in. wide, 1/16 in. lip. The Tru-Flate or Parker interchange, also called Type C.
- V-style, High Flow: 3/8 in. wide, 3/16 in. tip. Also sold as European or Megaflow.
- L-style, Lincoln: 9/32 in. wide with a long 3/4 in. tip.
Why It Matters
Brands use their own letters and names for the same plug. Match the shape and size, not just the letter on the package.
Get It Right: A coupler only takes plugs of its own style unless it's a universal. An M-style plug in a T-style coupler won't hold.
Step 5 of 6
Check the Body Size
Body size, also called flow size, is how big the air path is. It's separate from the thread, and it sets how much air gets through.
How to Check
- 1/4 in. body: the everyday size for air tools and inflators. Our M-style and T-style couplers flow up to 40 SCFM, A-style up to 34.
- 3/8 in. body: Milton P-style, a higher flow Tru-Flate interchange, up to 60 SCFM.
- 1/2 in. body: Milton G-style, up to 99 SCFM for the biggest air tools.
- Plug and coupler have to match in body size as well as style.
Why It Matters
A bigger body moves more air through the same hose end, which keeps big impact guns running at full power.
Get It Right: Body size, not thread size, sets the airflow. A 3/8 in. body can come with a 1/4 in. thread, like the Milton 1803 P-style.
Step 6 of 6
Check the Thread
Last, match the thread that screws into your tool or hose: its size, and whether it's male or female.
How to Check
- Most 1/4 in. body plugs and couplers have a 1/4 in. NPT thread. Some come in 3/8 or 1/2 in.
- MNPT, or MPT, is male: threads on the outside. It screws into a tool's air inlet.
- FNPT, or FPT, is female: threads on the inside. It screws onto a male fitting.
- Seal male threads with PTFE tape or thread sealant so they don't leak.
Why It Matters
The style decides whether it connects. The thread decides whether it screws on. Both have to match.
Get It Right: Wrap tape the way the fitting turns in, clockwise from the end, and leave the first thread bare so no tape ends up in the tool.
